  • When is the application deadline?

    For BFA students, applications are due October 15 (spring transfer ONLY), November 1 (early action), and January 15 (regular decision). For MFA directors and playwrights, applications are due December 1; for MFA actors, they are due on January 15.

    What is the application fee?

    The application fee is $50 + a small fee in Acceptd .

    Can the application fee be waived?

    The New School waives application fees for those who meet the eligibility guidelines outlined on the Apply Online website.

    Can I defer my enrollment to a future term?

    Deferral guidelines can be found on the Accepted Students website.

    Does the School of Drama offer any financial aid and/or scholarships?

    Yes. All applicants to the School of Drama are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships (MFA) or both need-based and merit-based scholarships (BFA). Please keep in mind that college and graduate school are a significant personal and financial commitment. Although scholarship funding is possible, we encourage applicants to explore additional resources for funding their education.

    What affiliation does The New School have with AMDA?

    Graduates of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) Integrated and Studio programs are eligible to apply for admission to the Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students. Interested applicants should contact the Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students Office of Undergraduate Admission.

  • English is not my first language. May I apply to the School of Drama?

    Yes. The School of Drama welcomes applicants whose first language is not English. But because theater is a language-intensive art form, we will ask that you submit a recent TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score with your application. For more information, visit TOEFL , IELTS , or PTE .

    What must I receive on the TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE exams for admission consideration?

    The minimum score required for TOEFL (IB) is 100, for IELTS is 7.0, and for PTE is 68. Our TOEFL institution code is 2385.

    Could I qualify for a TOEFL/IELTS/PTE exemption?

    The TOEFL/IELTS/PTE requirement may be waived for applicants who have earned a four-year degree from a U.S. College or University, or for citizens of the following countries whose native language is also English: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, or Commonwealth Caribbean (Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago).

    English is not my first language, but I completed my bachelor's degree at an American university. Must I still submit a TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score?

    Yes. Requirements for academic programs at the undergraduate level can be significantly different from the requirements of our graduate theater program. It is important that we see a recent assessment of your English proficiency.

    I completed my bachelor's degree at a university outside the United States. What steps do I take to apply?

    All transcripts not written in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Applicants who attended postsecondary institutions outside of the United States are required to have their transcript(s) evaluated by World Education Services (WES) , our preferred provider, or by another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES) . A course-by-course evaluation must be prepared for each transcript. Please review the BFA application instructions or the MFA application instructions for more detailed information.

  • Prospective MFA Students

  • Can I transfer credits from another MFA program?

    No, the School of Drama MFA program does not accept transfer credits. Students at the School of Drama MFA study together in order to develop a common vocabulary and strong ensemble.

    I haven't completed my bachelor's degree yet. May I still apply to the School of Drama?

    Because the School of Drama MFA is a graduate program, all admitted students must complete a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent before enrolling. However, it is possible to apply in the final year of undergraduate studies, as long as all work will be completed before enrolling at The New School.

    I have a bachelor's degree, but it isn't in Drama or Theater. May I still apply?

    Yes! The School of Drama MFA welcomes students with a wide variety of educational backgrounds. However, it is expected that applicants will have significant theatrical training and/or experience.

  • Prospective MFA Actors

  • Will all MFA Acting applicants be invited to audition for the School of Drama?

    Auditions are by invitation only. Prospective students should submit an online application and all supporting materials through Acceptd for consideration.

    How do I schedule my initial audition?

    After we receive completed applications, we begin scheduling auditions on a rolling basis at the end of November and will contact applicants directly.

    If I am invited to audition, what will I need to prepare?

    Actors must present a one-minute contemporary monologue and a one-minute classical monologue for the initial audition.

    I prefer to audition in a certain city and/or on a certain date. What can I do to guarantee that if I'm invited, I am scheduled for that preferred audition site?

    If you have a strong preference for a particular audition location and/or date, you must complete your application early. Keep in mind that your New School application and your Acceptd submission must be completed before an application is reviewed and an audition is scheduled. If you have submitted your application by the deadline, and we would like to see you at the audition, we will make every effort to accommodate your preference.

    I cannot make the regional audition. What alternatives do I have?

    It is strongly recommended that applicants audition for the program in person. If you have extenuating circumstances that will prevent this, we will, on rare occasions, accept a videotaped initial audition.     What happens after audition?

    A select group of applicants seen at auditions will be invited to the Callback Weekend, which takes place in New York in early March. These individuals will be notified in mid-February.

  • Prospective MFA Directors and Playwrights

  • What should be included in my production portfolio?

    Your portfolio might include a director's notebook or prompt book, script notes, thematic essays, blocking ideas, design sketches, schedules, or other administrative materials. Keep in mind, however, that each portfolio is unique, and should include materials that best speak to your directorial process. All portfolios are submitted with your online application at Acceptd.

    May I submit my portfolio online or send a CD/VHS?

    The New School for Drama accepts portfolios only through Acceptd.

    My application is complete and I have sent in my production portfolio. Now what?

    Your application and portfolio will be reviewed by the Directing department head and/or selected faculty from the department. A select group will be invited to the Callback Weekend, which takes place in New York in mid-March. All applications are considered still under review until final admission decisions are sent out the third week in March.

    What are the writing sample guidelines?

    Playwrights should submit an original full-length play. Playwrights have an option to also submit an additional one-act play. All writing samples will be submitted via Acceptd.

    Your script should include a page with character descriptions and a brief synopsis of the story. It should be in standard manuscript layout, with character names above the dialogue, in 12 point Courier or Times New Roman font. It needs to be in PDF format for submission.

    I have a number of strong pieces. May I submit more than what is described above?

    No. Please only submit what is described above.

    My application is complete, and I have sent in my writing sample. Now what?

    Your application will be reviewed and your script(s) read by the Playwriting department head and/or selected faculty from the department. A select group will be invited to the Callback Weekend, which takes place in New York in mid-March. All applications are considered still under review until final admission decisions are sent out the third week in March.
