• Andy Milne, Pianist, Composer, and Professor at the School of Jazz, explores what happens when boredom sets in— and you let it.

    We have designed a uniquely challenging and flexible curriculum that includes intensive courses in technical, conceptual, aesthetic and historical aspects of jazz and contemporary music. The curriculum emphasizes collaboration, gaining instrumental fluency, performance, and developing innovative skills to pursue a wide variety of careers in music.

    Our Mentoring Program

    Artistic innovation will never be learned from the back row of a seminar. Some things have to be experienced firsthand. The mentorship of students by musicians like bassist Reggie Workman, who transformed music with icons like John Coltrane, follows the tradition of personal, direct training of creative musicians. That’s the way the greats learned it. And that’s the way we teach it.

    Our Faculty

    In our case, those who do, teach. Our faculty consists of top-ranked professional musicians and industry leaders. When they’re not teaching, they are making the world a much cooler place by performing, recording new music, leading socially conscious lives, and successfully navigating career opportunities. Their expertise and life experience are both fascinating and invaluable.

    Performance Opportunities in NYC

    Going to school here in New York gives you the benefit of the best live music venues in the world within walking distance of your classes. Our students perform at more than 150 events every year. They play jazz clubs like Joe’s Pub, The Jazz Standard, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and at cultural hotspots like The Morgan Library, the Neue Galerie, New York Live Arts, and the Highline. They’re in Union Square Park, Madison Square Park, and Hudson River Park. They perform on live radio at WBGO 88.3 FM and WBAI 99.5 FM.

    Also, every spring seven selected quartets go to the Bern International Jazz festival in Switzerland.  No wonder our Gig Office is more popular than a 2-5-1 progression. It handles and manages the huge demand for paying gigs for our students.
