Degree Requirements

  • This page outlines requirements for the degree in History (BA, History). Students can also study this subject as a minor or as part of a self-designed major (BA or BS, Liberal Arts).

    Students must receive grades of C or better in all courses taken to fulfill major requirements. Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the chair of the program.     Requirements for the History Major (BA, History)

    The major in History requires completion of 13 courses, distributed as shown below. To see which courses fulfill these requirements, visit the Lang course finder.

    • Two foundation courses, chosen from
      • LHIS 2016 Doing History
      • LHIS 3001 Uses of the Past
      • ULEC 2400 America Is Hard to Find
    • Two introductory history courses, chosen in consultation with an advisor in the History program
    • Five additional history courses, at least four of which must be at the 3000 level or higher and three of which should be part of a thematic cluster (e.g., gender or U.S. history). Students are encouraged to take one course covering a period before 1789 and one covering non-U.S. history.
    • Three thematically related courses outside the major, chosen in consultation with the chair or an advisor in the History program
    • Senior Capstone:
      LHIS 4950 Independent Senior Project (prerequisite: LHIS 4900)
