Gender and Sexuality Studies


  • The Graduate Certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies provides a structured approach to courses in gender and sexuality that are offered across the colleges of The New School. Please contact us at to express your interest.

    To receive the certificate, you must satisfy the requirements listed below. External applicants not already enrolled in a New School graduate program must first apply here and be admitted before starting the certificate process outlined below.

    Register your intention

    The certificate is open to all current graduate students at The New School, as well as students who apply directly to it.

    • For graduate students already enrolled in other New School graduate programs:
      • To enroll, you must make an appointment with one of the GSS co-directors to discuss your planned course of study.
      • You should bring with you a filled-out Enrollment Form and a copy of your unofficial transcript.
    • For prospective students:

    Successfully complete the core required course Gender and Its Discontents

    • This core required course is offered each spring. It will familiarize you with the key theoretical and methodological approaches to gender and sexuality.

    Successfully complete three electives that you select from a list of designated courses

    • Each year, before fall and spring registration take place, we will post a list of gender and sexuality studies electives that count toward the certificate. An archive of past courses is also available.

    • For graduate students already enrolled in other New School graduate programs:
      • Up to two of these electives may come from your home department or program.
      • At least one elective must come from another department or college at The New School.
      • No more than 9 credits can count toward both your degree and the certificate.
    • For graduate students enrolled directly in the certificate program:
      • Electives must come from at least two different departments at The New School.

    Declare your completion of the GSS course requirements

    • During or after the semester in which you complete your GSS course sequence, you should make an appointment to meet with one of the GSS co-directors.
    • You must bring with you a completed exit form.
    • You must bring with you an unofficial transcript to demonstrate your successful completion of the GSS course sequence.

    Following the successful completion of all these requirements, the co-director will confirm your qualifications in scholarship in gender and sexuality studies. Your graduate certificate will appear on your final transcript and your degree from The New School.
