The New School for Social Research

Gender and Sexuality Studies

  • The Graduate Certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies (GSS) is a university-wide program that brings together faculty and courses from across The New School to address gender and sexuality from many disciplinary perspectives.

The certificate is designed to promote intellectual collaboration on issues of gender and sexuality among students and faculty representing a variety of disciplines. It is open to both New School students enrolled in graduate degree programs and students from outside the university.

The program prepares its students to recognize and respond to gender-based questions such as: What is gender? How is sexuality culturally constructed? How do attitudes toward gender affect individual experience, artifact design, artistic production, and modes of social organization? What does social justice looks like in a gendered (or post-gendered) world?

The GSS curriculum consists of one course and three electives, which can be chosen from a range of disciplines that include Anthropology, Economics, International Affairs, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, Media Studies, Creative Writing, Fashion Studies, Visual Studies, and Art and Design History.

    Career Paths

Whether you're exploring graduate school opportunities or furthering your career, the GSS Certificate offers a path to advancement. Students who earn the certificate on its own or in addition to their primary graduate degree can pursue careers in academia, the arts, design, fashion, public policy, government, NGOs, nonprofit management, and clinical psychology or pursue advanced study.
