    Professor of Architecture and Urbanism


    Jilly Traganou is an architect, and Associate Professor in Spatial Design Studies. Her work examines space and architecture in intersection with the fields of cultural studies, media studies and design studies. Her current research is focusing on design's role in the configuration of national identities, and she is presently working on a book entitled 'Designing the Olympics: (Post)national identity in the Age of Globalization' (to be published by Routledge). She is the author of The T_kaid_ Road: Traveling and Representation in Edo and Meiji Japan (RoutledgeCurzon, 2004), a co-editor with Miodrag Mitrasinovic of Travel, Space, Architecture (Ashgate, 2009) and a contributor to the Japanese Capitals in Historical Perspective (Routledge, 2002), Suburbanizing the Masses (Ashgate, 2003) and Global Design History (Routledge, forthcoming). She has published in the Journal of Modern Greek Studies, Journal of Design History, Design Issues, Hitotsubashi Journal of Arts and Science, L'architecture d'aujourd'hui, and other international journals. Her collaborative project with Eleni Tzirtzilaki and Lydia Matthews 'Spatial Imaginary and Multiple Belonging: The "Open House" Workshop' was presented in the architectural research series Unbuilt (Byzantine Museum of Athens, June 2008). She is currently working on the 'Routes and Homes' project, supported by the Design and Social Science fund and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, in collaboration with Lydia Matthews, Gabriel Bendiner-Viani and the Lower Manhattan Arts Academy (LoMA).Jilly Traganou has been Fellow of the Japan Foundation, the European Union Science and Technology Post-doctorate Program and Princeton Program in Hellenic Studies, and a recipient of two Graham Foundation grants.
