A self-described film lover, Jean attended programs at the New York Film Academy, USC School of Cinematic Arts, and UCLA Extension before his time at The New School where he gained a broad education about the entertainment industry. He also interned at the talent and literary agency Resolution, assisted the director of Public Affairs at MTV Networks and the vice president of Public Affairs at Viacom International Media Networks, and worked as a producer in his native Switzerland. Jean believes that having a good education will help him accomplish his goal of working on the business side of a major film studio, and that is why he decided on The New School.
“The people in the Admission Office were really supportive and helped me transfer credits I earned at other institutions," says Jean. "They were excited for me to join the New School family.”
Once accepted, Jean worked with his advisor to select classes that met his needs.
“As a student in the Liberal Arts program," he says, "I can choose from a mix of courses that cross disciplinary boundaries.”
During his first semester, Jean enrolled in an online journalism course. The flexibility of the online schedule is particularly attractive to working professionals, and Jean enjoyed interacting with classmates with real-world experience. He says, "We are all on different paths and at different points in our lives, and we learn from one another.”
Many of Jean’s instructors are also practitioners, who challenge him to learn by doing. Jean explains, “A teacher can talk to you about different types of lenses, but if you don’t try them yourself, you’re knowledgeable only about theory. It’s in practice that you learn the most, because you learn from your mistakes.” In summer 2014, Jean gained hands-on experience as a marketing and publicity intern at Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles.
“I felt like a West Coast ambassador for the university,” he says, "and it was great to discover how highly people in California thought of The New School.”
