New York, September 26, 2019 – The New School's School of Jazz and Contemporary Music announced today that acclaimed guitarist and composer Julian Lage will join the faculty of the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.

Hailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation and “highest category of improvising musicians” (New Yorker), Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique, and a gift for freely associating between styles, tempos, keys, and textures that adds to his limitless improvisational spirit.

“I am thrilled and honored to be included in The New School’s progressive and dynamic community,” said Lage. “I can’t wait to learn from all and share in the music!”

At School of Jazz, Lage will teach Improvisational Ensemble and serve on the private lesson faculty, where he will work with students and faculty throughout the college on a wide range of special projects, productions, and courses.

“We are thrilled to welcome Julian to the faculty at The New School," said Keller Coker, Dean of School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, Associate Dean of the College of Performing Arts. "Julian is a world-class, innovative artist, and I can't wait to see what he creates with our students at The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music."

Though only 31, the California-born New York-based musician boasts a long, prolific résumé on his own accord in addition to sideman alongside such icons as Gary Burton and John Zorn and duo partner with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch, and more.
