macy's and parsons school of design announce new executive education partnership

September 11, 2019, NEW YORK – Macy’s and The New School’s Parsons School of Design today announced the launch of a new custom executive education program for Macy’s Merchandising colleagues within the curriculum of the Macy’s Fashion Academy. Part of The New School’s Corporate Partnerships Initiative, and led by Parsons’ acclaimed faculty, the multi-faceted program is designed for a changing retail landscape and will offer innovative, discipline-based curricula to provide Macy’s merchants and designers with new skills, knowledge, and methodologies.

“We are thrilled to partner with Parsons to create this unique and best-in-class custom educational experience for our colleagues,” said Patti Ongman, Macy’s chief merchandising officer. “The skills and tools offered through this program will challenge our merchants to think critically and disrupt processes to ultimately improve and innovate the omnichannel customer experience.”

“We are proud to partner with Macy’s, one of the nation’s leading retailers, to offer a multidisciplinary educational experience for their executives, designers and merchants,” said Dr. Rachel Schreiber, Executive Dean of The New School’s Parsons School of Design. “A Parsons education prepares the next generation of designers and design strategists to innovate under conditions of constant change, and we are excited to now bring our unique approach to a wider audience of fashion and design industry partners."

Through a series of master classes, lectures and workshops, the partnership will offer Macy’s merchants a deep exposure to today’s most pressing business issues. Parsons award-winning scholars and practitioners will identify emerging challenges and opportunities in retail to help shape best practices and stimulate new ways of thinking in the workplace. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Macy’s merchants will engage with the School’s world-class design expertise for an unparalleled educational experience.

In addition to skills-based learning, the curriculum will offer Macy’s colleagues a fresh way of looking at the inner workings of the fashion industry from a global perspective. Macy’s fashion designers and merchants will be able to participate in immersive master classes that inspire new work processes and methodologies, further enriching a creative process.

The program will be taught by Parsons faculty, including noted trend forecaster Li Edelkoort, designer, musician, and author Keanan Duffty, customer experience strategist Christopher Lacy, fashion marketing and campaign expert Laura Lanteri, and more. Macy’s executives will gain new skills to inspire the customer through Parsons’ human-centered approach to design education including building compelling and on-trend assortments, innovating the omnichannel customer experience, and anticipating and responding to rapid changes in the market.
