New York, September 26, 2019 – The New School's School of Jazz and Contemporary Music announced today that acclaimed trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi will join the faculty of School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.

Ralph Alessi is a celebrated performer, composer, and bandleader who regularly collaborates with Steve Coleman, Jason Moran, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, Fred Hersch, Uri Caine, Marc Copland, and more. He has recorded nine albums of original compositions, which draw on everything from post-bop to neo-classical music. Alessi is currently a recording artist for ECM, and was most recently an Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Nevada - Reno. He was also Director of the School of Improvisational Music at the school.

“I love teaching, and greatly look forward to making positive contributions to The New School,” said Alessi. “As one of the leading jazz and contemporary music schools in New York City, I’m excited to collaborate with my colleagues and students across the university’s College of Performing Arts.”

At School of Jazz, Alessi will serve on the private lesson faculty, where he will work with students and faculty throughout the college on a wide range of special projects, productions, and courses.

Alessi is the bandleader of the Baida Quartet, who have been called “unstoppably inventive,” by the New York Times. He also leads the This Against That quintet, named for Alessi’s 2007 album This Against That, a recording that made JazzTimes’ Top 10 for the year.
